I´m long time Finnish Parliamentarian – I have spent over 30 years in Parliament. I have been the Chair of the Commerce Committee since 2003.I have held a committee chair position since the year 1987,when I became leader of the Social- and Health Committee and then the Labour and Equality Committee. During 1997-99 I was acted as Minister of Finance and in 1998 I was the Council leader of the European Central Bank (ECB).
This all means that my focus throughout these years has been on energy, banking and insurance sectors and consumer questions. We had a large bank crisis in the 90´s and vast unemployment in Finland. I dealt with these questions as Minister of Finance. In the spring of 1998 I announced in the Parliament session that the bank crises had ended in our country. We Finns know about debt, loans and also loans without guarantees.
We decided to propose in our Commerce Committee to give two licences for the building of nuclear plants in Finland and a licence for a nuclear waste plant. These nuclear decisions have caused significant large interest around the world. Finland is a country of thousands of lakes and large forest areas. Finnish nature and the four seasons are typical of our life style. They are part of our welfare.
I´m proud of Finland and my home city of Lahti in Päijät-Häme.
